What Do Women Need to Become Stronger Leaders in Publishing?

Publishing is no longer simply about producing books. It has evolved into a dynamic industry where culture intersects with technology, commerce meets creativity, and influence goes hand in hand with responsibility. At the heart of this transformation, women have established a strong presence across every facet of publishing, from editorial and design to marketing and content management. Yet broader participation does not automatically translate into greater leadership. Decision-making roles still need more women whose vision and expertise can help shape the future of the industry. Building women leaders in publishing is therefore no longer a choice, but a necessity for creating a more diverse, innovative, and sustainable publishing landscape.

True leadership begins with an investment in knowledge. A woman working in publishing today must have a deep understanding of the industry’s rapid transformation, from intellectual property, rights management, and translation to digital publishing, audiobooks, artificial intelligence, and audience analytics. She must also develop the skills to lead teams, negotiate effectively, and build strategic partnerships. The future of publishing will not be shaped by editorial expertise alone, but by the ability to combine cultural insight with strategic vision. The broader her professional toolkit becomes, the greater her ability to move from implementing ideas to shaping them.

Building meaningful professional networks is just as important as acquiring technical expertise. Leadership flourishes when women have access to mentorship, opportunities to learn, and spaces where collaboration and knowledge-sharing can thrive. It was with this vision that H.H. Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi launched PublisHer, an initiative created in response to the gap between women’s strong presence across the publishing sector and their underrepresentation in leadership positions. By fostering a global network that promotes mentorship, professional development, collaboration, diversity, and inclusion, PublisHer reflects the belief that lasting change begins when women are part of a professional community that believes in their potential and empowers them to grow as leaders.

Equally important is the need for workplaces that nurture ambition and place merit at the centre of advancement and decision-making. Organisations that champion innovation, embrace diversity, and provide clear pathways for professional growth do far more than cultivate successful employees, they develop leaders capable of creating lasting impact. When trust becomes embedded in an organisation’s culture, it becomes natural for women to lead publishing houses, direct international initiatives, and pioneer new models that connect books with broader and more diverse audiences.

The future of publishing will ultimately be defined by its ability to attract the brightest minds, regardless of gender or background, because transformative ideas flourish only in environments that value diverse perspectives. When women have access to knowledge, mentorship, and equitable opportunities, they do far more than lead organisations or projects, they help reshape the cultural landscape itself. Every woman who steps into a leadership role in publishing opens the door to new stories, broader perspectives, and a publishing ecosystem that reflects the richness of our diverse world while giving future generations greater opportunities to create, inspire, and leave a lasting impact.
