Popular Japanese authors Keigo Higashino and Haruki Murakami achieved first and second place respectively on the list of the most marketable foreign writers in China in 2017. The list was prepared on the grounds of their copyright revenues and actual sales of their work in the Chinese book market.

Higashino achieved total revenues of 42 million Yuan (about $6.6 million), while Murakami earned 18 million Yuan ($2.8 million). British writer J. K. Rowling came in third place with 15 million Yuan ($2.4 million).

The list of 25 writers, which is released annually, demonstrated the strong demand for literary work by Japanese authors in China. The total list includes eight Japanese novelists. Science fiction, crime and suspense genres came top of the list, especially those with movie and games franchises such as the Harry Potter series.
