Hachette UK increased its revenue by 3.4%, according to results for 2022 just reported by parent company Lagardère, with some bestselling Young Adult (YA) titles leading the way, CEO David Shelley highlighted the success of the Adult Trade division and bestsellers like Colleen Hoover’s Verity and Ali Hazelwood’s The Love Hypothesis.

Hachette’s backlist also continues to have steady YA bestsellers, among them Alice Osman’s Hearstopper series, successfully adapted on Netflix, while Delia Owen’s Where the Crawdads Sing continues to perform well five years after it was published.

Other key titles of the year included Fairy Tale by Stephen King, The Ink Black Heart by Robert Galbraith, The Locked Room by Elly Griffiths, Murder Before Evensong by Richard Coles, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing by Matthew Perry, and Undoctored by Adam Kay.

Shelley said Hachette UK’s TCM volume grew by 7.5% compared to 2021. He cited “good performances from across the group” and said standout divisions included Little, Brown, Hachette Children’s Group, Bookouture, Hachette Australia and Hachette India. Lagardère noted that Hachette’s UK publishing saw its “international activity” make strides, “fuelled by the success of high-profile titles on social networks in Australia and New Zealand and by a strong recovery in India”.
