by | Jun 20, 2024 | News

April marked a significant uptick for the US publishing industry, with sales from 1,277 publishers reporting to the Association of American Publishers’ StatShot program soaring 18.3% compared to April 2023. This surge provided a welcome boost after a sluggish first quarter, pushing total sales up 4.2% for the year’s first four months.

Adult book sales led the charge with a 25.1% increase. Digital audiobooks saw a remarkable 57.3% jump, while e-book sales climbed 19.8%. Print formats also fared well, with hardcover sales up 17.6% and trade paperback sales rising 29.2%.

Nonfiction in the adult category had its best performance in months, with a 23.5% rise, contributing to a slight 0.2% year-to-date gain. Adult fiction continued its strong performance, with April sales up 26.5% and an 8.7% increase for the year.

Children’s and young adult books also saw gains, particularly in digital audiobooks, which spiked 41.5%, driving a 5.5% overall segment increase. However, children’s nonfiction sales dipped 10.6%.

Other categories saw positive trends as well. Higher educational course materials sales rose 17.7%, professional books 6.7%, preK-12 instructional materials 12.2%, and university press sales increased 9%.
