Glenn Rolans, President of the Association of Canadian Publishers, has said that Canadian publishing houses lose roughly 50 million Canadian dollars per year due to the great extent of free usage of published materials educational institutions in the country are allowed.

Canadian laws allow school, college or university students or those going to any accredited training institute to make copies of copyrighted published materials for exchange of an annual payment as low as CAD 26. The cumulative fee paid by the users is distributed among Canadian publishing houses. Statistics show that roughly 600 million pages go under the photocopier annually.

Approximately 120 English language publishers are members of the Association of Canadian Publishers, who take up 80 percent of the new titles published in Canada each year.
