“The Vegetarian” by South Korean author Han Kang, which won the 2016 Man Booker International Prize, continues to top the country’s bestseller list in both print and electronic formats, nine months after it was released in October 2017.

Kang spent almost three years working on the novel, which deals with the peaks and troughs of married life through dramatic events between a husband and his wife whose decision to stop eating meat after a bloody, nightmarish dream about human cruelty leads to devastating personal consequences.

Having emptied her fridge of meat, this simple change in her life turns into a series of twists and turns, culminating in a sting in the tale and a mysterious death.

The ending of the novel has sparked the curiosity of Korean readers, known for their love of dramas, detective plots and unexpected endings, a reason why the novel has overwhelmingly dominated the competition for so long.
