Obama Slams Conservative-Led Book Bans

Former US President Barack Obama has strongly criticized the recent surge of book bans led by conservative groups. In a powerful Medium post, he pointed out that there seems to be a disturbing pattern in the targets of these bans – books written by or featuring people of colour, indigenous individuals, and members of the LGBTQ community.

Expressing gratitude towards librarians, Obama highlighted how some of the books that shaped his life are currently facing challenges from those who disagree with their ideas and perspectives. He acknowledged that there have been instances when conservative authors’ works or books containing ‘triggering’ content have also been in the line of fire.

Obama emphasized that instead of engaging in open dialogue and understanding diverse viewpoints, the prevailing impulse appears to be silencing dissenting voices. He strongly believes that this approach is fundamentally misguided and goes against the values that have made the country great.

In the face of these concerning developments, Obama’s message is clear – preserving the freedom of expression and safeguarding the diverse voices present in literature is essential to upholding the principles of a democratic society.
