Annie Ernaux wins the 2022 Nobel prize in literature

The 2022 Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to Annie Ernaux “for her courage and clinical acuity in exposing the roots, estrangements, and restraints of personal memory”.

Swedish Academy awards the prize worth 10 million Swedish crowns ($914,704).

Since 1901, the Nobel Prizes have been awarded for achievements in science, literature, and peace and were established by Swedish chemist and engineer Alfred Nobel, who invented dynamite.

The award generates huge media attention and can catapult lesser-known authors to global fame as well as spur sales for literary superstars who were already widely read before winning the prize.

The prize has been awarded to writers from outside mainstream literary genres, such as French philosopher Henri Bergson in 1927, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 1953, and American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan in 2016.

Tanzanian novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah won the prize last year, widely regarded as the world’s most prestigious literary prize.
