Libraries and social media Transforming the Reading Culture in Kurdistan

Digital reading is rapidly expanding in Kurdistan, fueled by the growing demand for e-books and the influence of social media in promoting a reading culture. Libraries and online platforms play a crucial role in attracting new readers, while publishers and intellectuals adapt to this shift.

Reader Hamed Amin shared said: “I read on my mobile phone, even in the mosque. Smartphones have made reading more accessible, allowing instant access to interpretations.”

Booksellers also acknowledge the trend, with many readers using smartphones and social media to explore books before making purchases. Shafiq Mohammed, a bookstore owner, noted: “Most people have limited time. They browse books online before deciding whether to buy them.”

Despite the rise of digital formats, Kurdistan’s literary scene remains vibrant, with strong translation and publishing efforts. Erbil, a key cultural hub, hosts the Erbil International Book Fair, attracting a global audience. The 16th edition (April 2023) showcased over 1.5 million books from 300+ publishers under the theme “Read… Your Intelligence is Not Artificial.”

With preparations underway, Erbil will host the 17th edition from April 9–19, 2025, reinforcing its commitment to literature and authentic creativity. The fair continues to unite authors, publishers, and readers, fostering intellectual exchange and cultural growth.
