According to the latest SME Monitor report released by Monsha’at, the Kingdom’s General Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises, Saudi Arabia’s publishing industry is witnessing remarkable growth. With over 500 local publishing houses operating across the Kingdom, the sector is making significant strides in bringing Saudi and Arabic-language literature to wider audiences.
The report attributes much of this progress to the establishment of the Literature, Publishing, and Translation Commission in 2020. This initiative has fueled advancements in key areas, including the increase in the number of publishing houses and the impressive turnout of 2.2 million visitors at Saudi book fairs in 2023. The Riyadh Book Fair, a flagship event of the commission, showcased literary works from more than 30 countries and 2,000 publishing houses, attracting over a million visitors and generating $7.5 million in book sales.
Highlighting the commission’s efforts to empower the sector, the report details initiatives designed to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurs. These include specialized business accelerators, which have benefitted over 100 SME projects, boosting their average revenues by 20% and creating 115 new permanent jobs. The commission has also facilitated 54 public and private partnerships, enabling the entry of regional and global publishing houses into the Saudi market, thereby enriching local production and enhancing market competitiveness.
In addition, the commission is driving the professionalization of the industry through programs that help Saudi SMEs adopt best practices from international publishing houses, develop better print and digital publishing skills, and forge creative literary partnerships with civil society and local venues such as cafés.
The report also sheds light on global trends impacting the SME publishing sector, such as the rise of digital and audiobook markets, direct-to-consumer subscription services, and self-publishing models. These innovations are opening new opportunities for Saudi publishers to tap into the growing global market of over 1 billion ebook consumers.
