Rabat Crowned World Book Capital for 2026

by | Oct 9, 2024 | News

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has announced Rabat, Morocco, as the World Book Capital for 2026, following the recommendation of the World Book Capital Advisory Committee.

The yearlong celebration will commence on April 23, 2026, aligning with World Book and Copyright Day. As part of this prestigious title, Rabat will commit to promoting books and reading for all age groups and demographics, both locally and globally, through a variety of events and initiatives.

UNESCO, along with its World Book Capital Advisory Committee—which includes key organisations such as the European and International Booksellers Federation (EIBF), the International Authors Forum (IAF), the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), and the International Publishers Association (IPA)—recognised Rabat for its ongoing dedication to fostering literature, empowering women and youth through reading, and combating illiteracy, particularly in underserved communities.

“Following Rio de Janeiro in 2025, I am pleased to announce that Rabat will be the World Book Capital for 2026. Rabat is a vibrant cultural center where books serve as a bridge for sharing knowledge and arts,” Azoulay remarked. She further emphasized, “The city’s growing book industry is vital for enhancing education and fostering a love for reading.”

Rabat’s literary scene is thriving, with 54 publishing houses, Africa’s third-largest international book fair, and a growing number of bookstores. This robust sector is not only a key part of the city’s creative economy but also plays a significant role in expanding access to knowledge.

As the 2026 World Book Capital, Rabat will launch a range of initiatives to improve access to books and strengthen the local publishing industry. These efforts will include innovative programs focused on increasing literacy rates and ensuring access to reading materials for all residents. The ultimate goal is to support sustainable economic growth and drive social progress in the city.

Rabat becomes the 26th city to hold this prestigious title since the program’s inception in 2001, joining the ranks of previous honorees like Madrid, Alexandria, Sharjah, New Delhi, and Rio de Janeiro.
