Turkish Publisher Sues Turkey Over Freedom of Expression

Turkish Cypriot publisher Levent takes Turkey to ECHR

Sener Levent, editor-in-chief of Turkish Cypriot newspaper Avrupa, has sued Turkey for alleged violation of his freedom of expression at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

A lawyer for Levent argued that Turkey violated Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights and that his client was ‘judicially harassed’ by Ankara.

ECHR’s Article 10 states that “everyone has the right to freedom of expression.

“This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers,” he said.

According to an article in Avrupa, Levent is facing seven criminal cases in Turkish Cypriot ‘courts’ and three in Turkish courts. All cases against Levent aim to silence him, according to the article.
