The Home where Steinbeck Wrote ‘Of Mice And Men’ goes on sale for $16.75m

The home where the author of the American classic, John Steinbeck wrote “Of Mice and Men” is going on sale for the first time in 60 years with a hefty price tag for those interested – and it comes with the original hut that Steinbeck used for his writing.

The location was the writing backdrop to many of his revered novels, making it an exciting addition to the market.

It’s a big investment for this piece of literary history. The property, located in the upscale Long Island village of Sag Harbor, an exclusive village in Long Island, New York, the property hasn’t been on sale in 60 years and is selling for $16.75million but retains features showing off its history, including Steinbeck’s ‘writing hut’. Steinbeck crafted his classic novels while enjoying the breathtaking views over the Upper Sag Harbor Cove on this 60ft pier. In addition to the pier and writing hut, the property also features an in-ground pool. The hut in the garden has been persevered too, and it’s where Steinbeck sat to write while looking out at the views over the cove.

Steinbeck called this place his personal ‘Eden and ‘my little fishing place’, living here until his death in 1968. Though he grew up in Salinas, California, he moved to New York in 1941.

After a weekend trip to Sag Harbor in 1955, the then 53-year-old bought the cottage and stayed there for the rest of his life. As well as Of Mice And Men, Steinbeck wrote Travels With Charley and The Winter Of Our Discontent there too.

He built the hut himself to create a distraction-free place for creating his work – some of which earned him Nobel and Pulitzer prizes.

The home also has two bathrooms, a guest house, and a spot for fishing as Steinbeck often did on the pier. Inside there’s a grand floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace and cathedral-like beamed ceilings.
