British broadcaster Piers Morgan has challenged a passage in Charles Spencer’s memoir Swan Song: Diana, My Sister that linked him to the publication of secretly taken photographs of Princess Diana exercising at a gym in 1993. Morgan said he was working for The Sun at the time and did not become editor of the Daily Mirror until 1995, two years after the photographs appeared.
Spencer apologised for the mistaken assumption but stood by his account of a telephone call in which he told Morgan he was not welcome at his sister’s funeral. Morgan disputed that account too, saying he had spoken to Spencer respectfully. The disagreement now extends beyond a date that can be checked to a conversation the two men remember differently.
The apology has not ended Morgan’s objection. He called for the book to be withdrawn from sale and its remaining copies pulped, and said he had asked his lawyers to write to Spencer and the publisher. His challenge has become part of the memoir’s reception, drawing attention to how a verifiable error can shape the reading of a deeply personal account.
