New novel on war by Syrian novelist Maha Hassan

by | Jul 10, 2017 | News

Syrian Novelist Maha Hassan’s novel ‘Good Morning, War!’ has just been published by Al-Mutawassit Publishing in Italy. The new work explores human suffering during the Syrian conflict and forms part of a new wave of novels on the crisis as related by authors who have lived through it.

Good Morning, War! sees Maha Hassan travelling from her house in France, where she currently lives, to her destroyed former home in Aleppo. Throughout she recounts real life day-to-day stories about her mother, aunts, brother and her neighbourhood, with the devastating accounts revealing what has happened to her community.

Maha Hassan is a renowned young Syrian novelist who made a name for herself when she was awarded a Hellman/Hammett grant for persecuted writers by the organisation Human Rights Watch. She has written several novels, including ‘The Infinite: Biography of the Other’, ‘The Picture on the Cover’, ‘Hymns of Nothingness’, ‘The Tunnel of Existence’, ‘Daughters of the Wilderness’ and ‘Aleppo Subway’. Her novels ‘Umbilical Cord’ and ‘The Novels’ were longlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction, also known as the Arabic Booker.
