Microsoft Launches 8080 Books

by | Nov 21, 2024 | News

Microsoft has unveiled 8080 Books, a publishing imprint dedicated to sharing innovative research, ideas, and insights at the crossroads of science, technology, and business. Distributed by Ingram, the nonprofit initiative aims to spotlight emerging and diverse voices in these fields.

The imprint debuted its first title, No Prize for Pessimism by Microsoft’s Deputy CTO Sam Schillace, on November 12. Its next release, Platform Mindset by former Microsoft executive Marcus Fontoura, will follow later this year.

8080 Books will be overseen by Microsoft VP of communications strategy Steve Clayton as publisher, with Microsoft senior director of CEO communications Greg Shaw serving as founding editor. Unlike Microsoft Press, which specializes in technical guides, this imprint will focus on broader themes like technology’s role in shaping society, business innovation, and ethical considerations in policy.

Clayton and Shaw emphasized their goal to democratize book publishing by accelerating production timelines and revitalizing out-of-print titles. Revenue will support nonprofits through Microsoft Philanthropies. Inspired by the 8080 microprocessor, the imprint symbolizes innovation and accessibility in publishing.
