Dans cette lettre, aujourd\u2019hui propos\u00e9e \u00e0 la vente par le libraire londonien Bernard Quaritch pour 10 000 \u00a3, le jeune po\u00e8te \u00e9voque son d\u00e9couragement, ses d\u00e9sillusions amoureuses et une d\u00e9pendance probable \u00e0 l\u2019opium. Il confiait vouloir \u00ab se retirer dans une inactivit\u00e9 obscure \u00bb et renoncer d\u00e9finitivement aux exigences de la cr\u00e9ation litt\u00e9raire, malgr\u00e9 l\u2019ach\u00e8vement de son po\u00e8me philosophico-politique Religious Musings (M\u00e9ditations religieuses).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La correspondance laisse entrevoir les blessures d\u2019un esprit marqu\u00e9 par l\u2019\u00e9chec sentimental aupr\u00e8s de Mary Evans, son amour de jeunesse, et par une m\u00e9lancolie persistante. Coleridge se montre s\u00e9v\u00e8re envers ses premiers textes publi\u00e9s dans le Morning Chronicle, tout en reconnaissant que quelques-uns \u00ab ne sont pas si mauvais que les autres \u00bb. Il remercie n\u00e9anmoins Dyer d\u2019avoir d\u00e9fendu The Fall of Robespierre (La Chute de Robespierre), pi\u00e8ce co\u00e9crite avec Robert Southey, n\u00e9e d\u2019un projet utopique de \u00ab pantisocratie \u00bb en Pennsylvanie, visant \u00e0 cr\u00e9er une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9galitaire sans propri\u00e9t\u00e9 priv\u00e9e.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peu apr\u00e8s, Coleridge quitta Cambridge pour s\u2019installer dans le sud-ouest de l\u2019Angleterre, o\u00f9 il rencontra William Wordsworth. Leur collaboration mena \u00e0 la parution en 1798 de Lyrical Ballads (Ballades lyriques), acte fondateur du romantisme anglais. Coleridge composa alors ses chefs-d\u2019\u0153uvre, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (La Complainte du vieux marin) et Kubla Khan, ce dernier inspir\u00e9 par un r\u00eave sous l\u2019effet de l\u2019opium.
