Durant l\u2019hiver rigoureux de 1943-1944, Orwell \u00e9crivait dans un modeste appartement de Kilburn, au nord-ouest de Londres, et lisait chaque soir ses brouillons \u00e0 voix haute, transformant la chambre conjugale en v\u00e9ritable atelier critique. Plus qu\u2019une simple secr\u00e9taire, O\u2019Shaughnessy corrigeait, tapait les manuscrits et aurait m\u00eame encourag\u00e9 son \u00e9poux \u00e0 transformer l\u2019essai politique initial en une \u00ab fable animali\u00e8re \u00bb, conf\u00e9rant \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre sa port\u00e9e all\u00e9gorique universelle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achev\u00e9 en f\u00e9vrier 1944, le texte connut un parcours sem\u00e9 d\u2019emb\u00fbches \u00e9ditoriales. L\u2019alliance militaire avec l\u2019Union sovi\u00e9tique rendait p\u00e9rilleuse toute critique de Moscou, et plusieurs \u00e9diteurs, dont Faber, conseill\u00e9 par le po\u00e8te T.S. Eliot, rejet\u00e8rent le manuscrit. Des voix influentes, proches du camp pro-sovi\u00e9tique, cherchaient \u00e0 neutraliser des r\u00e9cits discordants. Ce n\u2019est qu\u2019en juillet 1944 que Fredric Warburg, directeur de Secker &amp; Warburg, accepta de publier l\u2019ouvrage malgr\u00e9 les risques, publication finalement retard\u00e9e jusqu\u2019au 17 ao\u00fbt 1945 par les p\u00e9nuries de papier li\u00e9es \u00e0 la guerre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depuis lors, La Ferme des Animaux s\u2019est impos\u00e9e comme un classique mondial, vendu \u00e0 plus de 11 millions d\u2019exemplaires et jamais \u00e9puis\u00e9. Pour Blair, l\u2019\u0153uvre ne se limite pas \u00e0 la satire de la r\u00e9volution russe ou du stalinisme : elle constitue une mise en garde intemporelle contre les dirigeants qui d\u00e9tournent des id\u00e9aux nobles \u00e0 leur profit. De l\u2019Europe de l\u2019Est \u00e0 la Birmanie, du Zimbabwe \u00e0 l\u2019Ukraine, son message a nourri les aspirations d\u00e9mocratiques.
