Winston Smith r\u00eave de sa m\u00e8re et de sa s\u0153ur prisonni\u00e8res dans un salon de paquebot englouti, image d\u2019une culpabilit\u00e9 profonde li\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019enfance. Le roman s\u2019ouvre sur une attaque de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s en mer, et la menace d\u2019une noyade dans la Chambre 101 p\u00e8se comme torture ultime. L\u2019eau n\u2019est pas qu\u2019un d\u00e9cor : elle est m\u00e9moire, punition, effroi. Elle agit comme une all\u00e9gorie de la perte de rep\u00e8res et de l\u2019engloutissement moral dans l\u2019univers d\u2019Oc\u00e9ania.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cette obsession remonte \u00e0 plus loin. Adolescent, Orwell fut boulevers\u00e9 par le naufrage du Titanic, bien plus que par les horreurs de la guerre. Dans Gardez l\u2019aspidistra en vie (Keep the Aspidistra Flying, 1936), l\u2019image d\u2019un paquebot sombrant symbolise la chute de la civilisation moderne. De 1984 \u00e0 ses essais comme Mon pays \u00e0 tort ou \u00e0 raison (My Country Right or Left, 1940), les r\u00e9f\u00e9rences maritimes jalonnent son \u0153uvre.
