N\u00e9 en 1938 au Kenya sous domination britannique, il a travers\u00e9 les d\u00e9cennies de colonisation et d\u2019ind\u00e9pendance, passant de l\u2019\u00e9criture en anglais (Weep Not, Child (Ne pleure pas, enfant), A Grain of Wheat (Un grain de bl\u00e9)) \u00e0 un tournant d\u00e9cisif : celui d\u2019abandonner l\u2019anglais pour le gikuyu, sa langue maternelle. Ce geste audacieux, loin d\u2019un simple choix stylistique, constituait un acte de r\u00e9sistance face \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00e9g\u00e9monie coloniale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pour Ng\u0169g\u0129, la langue incarnait bien plus qu\u2019un outil de communication : elle portait la m\u00e9moire et la conscience d\u2019un peuple. Dans Decolonising the Mind (D\u00e9coloniser l\u2019esprit, 1986), il \u00e9crivait : \u00ab La domination de la langue d\u2019un peuple par celle des nations colonisatrices est essentielle \u00e0 la domination de son univers mental. \u00bb En 1977, il fut emprisonn\u00e9 un an apr\u00e8s avoir \u00e9crit en gikuyu la pi\u00e8ce I Will Marry When I Want (Je me marierai quand je voudrai), critique des in\u00e9galit\u00e9s sociales. C\u2019est en d\u00e9tention qu\u2019il r\u00e9digea, sur du papier hygi\u00e9nique, Devil on the Cross (Le Diable sur la croix), premier roman moderne en gikuyu. Exil\u00e9 en 1982, il poursuivit son combat intellectuel aux \u00c9tats-Unis avant de revenir au Kenya en 2004.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Au fil de sa carri\u00e8re, Ng\u0169g\u0129 a publi\u00e9 plus de 25 ouvrages \u2014 romans, pi\u00e8ces, essais, m\u00e9moires \u2014 parmi lesquels Petals of Blood (P\u00e9tales de sang), Matigari (Matigari), Wizard of the Crow (Le Sorcier du corbeau) et Dreams in a Time of War (R\u00eaves en temps de guerre). Malgr\u00e9 l\u2019absence de Nobel, il revendiquait \u00ab le Nobel du c\u0153ur \u00bb, celui que lui offraient ses lecteurs.
