Elle traite de la question du brouillard de pollution qui a inspir\u00e9 nombre de ses romans mais qui a aussi contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 accentuer l\u2019asthme dont souffrait l\u2019\u00e9crivain d\u00e9funt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Les lecteurs de Dickens savent tr\u00e8s bien que le brouillard est une caract\u00e9ristique pr\u00e9pond\u00e9rante de ses romans, recouvrant Londres tout en traversant rues et ruelles\u2026avant de finalement laisser son empreinte dans le c\u0153ur de ses concitoyens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omnipr\u00e9sent dans ses \u00e9crits &#8211; dont quatre r\u00e9dig\u00e9s chez lui, \u00e0 \u00ab Doughty Street \u00bb dans la banlieue londonienne de Holborn : \u00ab Nicholas Nickleby \u00bb, \u00ab Les aventures de monsieur Pickwick \u00bb, \u00ab Oliver Twist \u00bb et \u00ab Barnaby Rudge \u00bb &#8211; le plus \u00ab n\u00e9buleux \u00bb est peut-\u00eatre \u00ab Bleak House \u00bb (La maison d\u2019\u00c2pre-Vent), qu\u2019il commence en mentionnant \u00ab la fum\u00e9e qui sort des chemin\u00e9es \u00bb. Dans \u00ab Un chant de No\u00ebl \u00bb, le brouillard entre dans le bureau de Scrooge, le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre protagoniste, s\u2019insinuant dans \u00ab chaque fissure et chaque trou de serrure \u00bb. On notera sa pr\u00e9sence aussi dans \u00ab Dombey et fils \u00bb, \u00ab Le myst\u00e8re d\u2019Edwin Drood \u00bb, \u00ab Les grandes esp\u00e9rances \u00bb, \u00ab Martin Chiselwit \u00bb, \u00ab Le vieux magasin d\u2019antiquit\u00e9s \u00bb ou encore \u00ab Notre ami commun \u00bb, dans lequel Dickens mentionne une brume telle \u00ab un \u00e9clair, un bourdonnement et un \u00e9touffement \u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ce brouillard de pollution recouvrant Londres faisait partie int\u00e9grante de la vie des habitants de la capitale britannique lorsque Dickens s\u2019y installa sur Dotty Street en 1856 et jusqu\u2019\u00e0 son d\u00e9c\u00e8s en 1970. \u00c0 cette \u00e9poque, la population londonienne a assist\u00e9 \u00e0 la mont\u00e9e en fl\u00e8che du taux de pollution ayant entrain\u00e9 une augmentation significative de son brouillard, exacerb\u00e9 par les usines au charbon implant\u00e9es au c\u0153ur d\u2019une ville dens\u00e9ment peupl\u00e9e.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L\u2019exposition organis\u00e9e par le Mus\u00e9e Charles Dickens, ouverte jusqu\u2019au 22 octobre, explique l\u2019apparition de ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne climatique dans l\u2019\u0153uvre de Dickens et comment cela a affect\u00e9 sa sant\u00e9 et celle des membres de sa famille mais aussi, comment la ville a tent\u00e9, et \u00e9chou\u00e9 ! de s\u2019attaquer \u00e0 la pollution tout au long de ces 200 derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab Il existe de nombreuses preuves des souffrances \u00e9prouv\u00e9es par Dickens et sa famille \u00e0 cause de l\u2019asthme. \u00bb a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le Dr. Nicholas Cambridge, auteur de \u00ab Bleak House : L\u2019histoire m\u00e9dicale de charles Dickens et sa famille. \u00bb. Dans le cas de l\u2019\u00e9crivain, il s\u2019agirait d\u2019une combinaison entre pollution environnementale et mode de vie, en particulier son amour pour les cigares. Mais il existe de nombreux t\u00e9moignages de Dickens se plaignant de douleurs \u00e0 la poitrine. Dans ses lettres, il y d\u00e9crit des hal\u00e8tements, une toux continuelle du matin au soir. C\u2019est pourquoi il l\u2019a influenc\u00e9 \u2013 ainsi que ses personnages \u2013 et est devenu source d\u2019inspiration, occupant une place pr\u00e9pond\u00e9rante dans ses livres.
