In Waip?’s libraries, located in New Zealand’s Waikato region on the North Island, a heartening return of readers and books has occurred following the elimination of overdue library book fines. This positive shift was particularly notable at the Cambridge Library.
The local district council decided to cease imposing fines for overdue adult books in July, reasoning that the $18,000 collected in fines barely covered administrative costs and created unnecessary stress for library staff.
Since this change, there has been a remarkable surge in the return of long-overdue books. For instance, one Cambridge library user alone brought back over 20 overdue books, and multiple individuals returned more than 10 books at once.
In the first month without fines, Cambridge witnessed 1,557 more books being returned compared to the same period in 2022. A similar trend emerged in Te Awamutu, with 470 additional books rejoining the shelves, some after years of absence. August’s return figures are expected to mirror this pattern.
