Buenos Aires Fair Marks 50th Anniversary

by | Dec 8, 2025 | News

In a move that reflects a renewed ambition to strengthen the international presence of one of South America’s most important cultural events, the Fundación El Libro is gearing up to host the 50th edition of the Buenos Aires International Book Fair, scheduled to take place from April 23 to May 11, 2026, at the La Rural Exhibition Center. Christian Rainone, president of the fair, affirmed that preparations are underway to deliver a major gathering for readers, an edition marked by historical significance, both in its programming and in the new initiatives planned for the milestone year.

The 2026 edition will open with a distinctly different tone. Peru has been selected as the Guest of Honor, and the traditional opening keynote will be replaced by a cultural conversation featuring three leading voices in Argentine literature: Gabriela Cabezón Cámara, Leila Guerriero, and Selva Almada. This approach pays tribute to the theme of the fair’s inaugural edition in 1975, “From the Author to the Reader,” which has since become one of its defining intellectual pillars. Rainone emphasized that the fair owes its prestige to the authors who shape it and its greatness to the readership that sustains it, noting the steady rise in attendance among children and young people. And although visitor numbers in 2024 saw a slight dip of 9.53%, surpassing 1.1 million attendees was still viewed as a positive outcome given the economic climate.

The golden jubilee will also introduce new initiatives centered on promoting reading and supporting education, most notably a school book-voucher program funded with an initial 200 million pesos, with plans to expand it through partnerships across national and local institutions. A similar program dedicated to senior citizens is also in development. The fair will feature a special pavilion for the 50th anniversary, built around five strategic themes that include art exhibitions, musical performances, immersive experiences, and programming tailored for children and young audiences. Before the official opening, the fair will once again host its Professional Days from April 21 to 23, bringing together publishers and literary agents from more than 30 countries. As part of its global outreach, Fundación El Libro will present the upcoming edition this week at the Guadalajara International Book Fair.
