Bibliotheca Alexandrina Celebrates Knowledge

by | Jul 8, 2025 | News

Amid a vibrant cultural atmosphere, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina inaugurated the 20th edition of its International Book Fair, which will run until 21 July 2025. This milestone edition sees broad participation from Egyptian and Arab publishing houses, organized in collaboration with the General Egyptian Book Organization and the Egyptian and Arab Publishers Association.

Marking two decades since its launch, this year’s Fair takes on special significance. Around 78 publishing houses are taking part, with a dedicated children’s pavilion featuring more than 16 publishers specializing in children’s books. Visitors can also explore a unique pavilion for old and rare books, inspired by the iconic “Sour Al-Azbakeya,” offering a rich literary experience that spans childhood favorites to cultural treasures.

Professor Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, affirmed that the Fair serves as a dynamic platform for dialogue and intellectual exchange. The cultural program features over 215 events, including talks, discussions, and panels, with the participation of nearly 800 intellectuals, writers, and academics. Events are taking place at three key locations: the Library in Alexandria, Sinnari House in Sayeda Zeinab, and Khadija Palace in Helwan.

One of the key highlights of this year’s edition is the award ceremony for the Library’s “Great Reading Competition,” which will be held on Thursday, 17 July, in the main conference hall. The event will gather an audience of writers, thinkers, and avid readers in celebration of those who have embraced reading as a way of life.

This year’s Fair pays tribute to the late Moroccan intellectual and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Benaissa, who passed away in March 2025. A former member of the Library’s Board of Trustees, Benaissa has been named the Fair’s Guest of Honor in recognition of his profound cultural and intellectual contributions.
