Artificial Intelligence (AI) remains the issue of the moment. The former chief executive of Google, Erich Smidt proposes a balance between government oversight of AI development and over-regulation of the sector.
He told the BBC: “The truth is that AI and the future is largely going to be built by private compaanies. It’s really important that governments understand what we’re doing and keep their eye on us.”
He added: “We’re not arguing that we should unilaterally be able to do these things without oversight, we think it should be regulated.”
He was speaking from Paris, where the AI Action Summit finished on 11 February and saw the publication of the closing Statement on Inclusive and Sustainable Artificial Intelligence for People and the Planet.
Publishers remain concerned over the protection of copyright.
José Borghino, Secretary General of the International Publishers Association (IPA) said: “We welcome the acknowledgement of intellectual property rights within the final Statement on Inclusive and Sustainable Artificial Intelligence from the AI Action Summit in Paris.
“However, it is important that this is developed further and becomes a core tenet of work in this area. As demonstrated ahead of the Summit, the creative sector is united, and we again call upon international leaders to ensure AI development respects intellectual property and encourages and rewards human creativity.”
