Frankfurt’s 2026 Literary Star: The Czech Republic

Frankfurter Buchmesse, scheduled for October 18 to 22, has unveiled its prestigious choice for the guest of honor market in 2026—the Czech Republic. The agreement sealing this honor for the 78th Frankfurt Book Fair (slated for October 7 to 11 that year) was formally ratified by Frankfurt’s President and CEO, Juergen Boos, and Martin Baxa, the Czech Minister of Culture.

Mr. Boos expressed his enthusiasm for this partnership, stating, “I’m elated to announce that the Czech Republic will grace Frankfurter Buchmesse as the Guest of Honor in 2026. What particularly excites me is the chosen theme for the country’s presence at the fair: ‘Czechia: A Country on the Coast.’ This intriguing portrayal of a landlocked Central European nation with maritime connotations is not only captivating but also ignites the imagination, extending beyond the conventional literary notion of ‘Bohemia by the Sea.’ Additionally, we eagerly anticipate an enticing guest of honor program, showcasing contemporary literature through the voices of esteemed authors such as Radka Denemarková, Jáchym Topol, and Kate?ina Tu?ková. Our program will also shine a spotlight on the rich cultural and literary tapestry of a nation nestled in the heart of Central Europe.”

Mr. Baxa echoed his delight at the announcement, emphasizing the significance of this opportunity for the Czech book industry and the broader cultural sector. He remarked, “The Czech Republic’s role as the guest of honor at Frankfurter Buchmesse 2026 is a momentous occasion, not only for the Czech book industry but for our entire cultural realm. It presents a unique opportunity to showcase the exceptional quality of Czech literature on a global stage—a profound investment in our future. I extend my gratitude to all those who have contributed to this outstanding achievement, recognizing that our most substantial endeavors lie ahead. I eagerly anticipate the results of this endeavor.”

In the upcoming 75th edition of Frankfurt Book Fair, the Czech Republic will make its presence felt with 23 distinguished publishing houses. The Czech market will curate its own program, spotlighting books from the celebrated “The Most Beautiful Books of 2022” series, alongside contemporary Czech prose, poetry, comics, and literature tailored for children and young adults.
